Denver's Halloween Starts Thursday This Year. Saturday Is Only Half of It.

October 29, 2026

When does Halloween start in Denver this year? It starts tonight, Thursday, Oct. 29. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, but the Denver events on the Lincoln Herald's Oct. 20 roundup of local fall festivals and trunk-or-treats begin Thursday evening and run through Saturday night.

Most of those stops sit along two roads, NC-73 and NC-16 Business. Several are held indoors or from the car, and they're spread over three nights instead of stacked on one. Families can choose a night that fits their week, and a rainy Saturday won't wipe out the holiday.

Here is the whole lineup, night by night, and how the nights connect.

Thursday, Oct. 29: The Library Kicks Things Off, and Duke Opens Its Gates

Thursday's Denver event is the Shanklin Spooktacular at the Florence S. Shanklin Branch Library, 7837 Fairfield Forest Road. It runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., it's free, and the Lincoln County library's event page promises games and crafts with no booking required. The Lincoln Herald listed it as a Halloween party, says costumes are encouraged and welcomes all ages.

The other Thursday option is new. Just across the lake off NC-73, McGuire Nuclear Station is holding its First Annual Trunk-or-Treat at the EnergyExplorium. Duke Energy's EnergyExplorium events calendar lists it from 6 to 9 p.m. and invites the whole family for "treats, games, and community connection." The Lincoln Herald's listing gives a 6 to 8 p.m. window and adds free admission, food trucks, yard games, popcorn and a photo booth at 13339 McGuire Nuclear Station Road in Huntersville. Duke runs the event, so go by its 6 to 9 p.m. time. Duke's directions say to turn onto McGuire Nuclear Station Road from NC Highway 73 and follow the signs.

The two events overlap on the clock, and both are on the NC-73 side of town. A family can do crafts at Shanklin first, then drive over to the trunk-or-treat while it's still going.

Friday, Oct. 30: A Pet-Friendly Stop and the Y's Trunk-or-Treat

On Friday, the events move to the NC-73 and Forney Creek Parkway area.

East Lincoln Animal Hospital at 7555 NC-73 hosts a trick-or-treat at 5:30 p.m. The Lincoln Herald describes it as an indoor gathering for kids, adults and pets, with candy for people and cookies for pets. It's the one stop all week where the dog gets a costume and a treat too.

Half an hour later, Sally's YMCA at 1601 Forney Creek Parkway starts Halloween at the Y at 6 p.m. The roundup lists it as a free community event with trunk-or-treating, crafts and interactive games.

Friday is a school night that leads into the weekend. Families who go Thursday and Friday have already had a full Halloween before the real date arrives, and Saturday becomes optional.

Saturday, Oct. 31: Three Stops, Spread Over the Day

Saturday's Denver events don't all fall in the usual dusk window. They're spread from midafternoon to late evening, and each one is a different kind of outing.

  1. 2 p.m., East Lincoln Black Box Theater, 6471 NC-73. The Lincoln Herald lists a family-friendly indoor trick-or-treat with interactive theater characters. It's an afternoon event, which works well for younger kids who will be in bed before dark.
  2. 6 to 8 p.m., Denver Fire Department, 3956 NC-16 Business. This is a drive-thru trick-or-treat. Follow the signs in the parking lot, and everyone stays in their cars. The first 100 kids get a reusable safety light and goodies. If you want one of the lights, arrive close to 6.
  3. 7 to 10 p.m., Royal Bliss Brewing, 7532 Royal Bliss Court. This one is for the adults. Royal Bliss's event page lists live music from Stolzwagon on Halloween night. The band plays in the beer garden or the enclosed patio, depending on the weather.

The Lincoln Herald published these listings on Oct. 20, so check with each host before you go.

Three Nights at a Glance, Sorted by Format

Halloween weekend forecasts can change by the hour. Here are the Denver-area stops sorted by setting, so you can find a backup without starting over.

The animal hospital and the Black Box Theater are both listed as indoor events, and the fire department's drive-thru keeps everyone in the car. Three of Denver's stops this week are covered no matter what the sky does.

Sunday, Nov. 1, and a Last Corn Maze Weekend Across the Lake

The Denver listings stop Saturday night. Families who want one more day of costumes can head to the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Its Halloween Daze and Spooky Knights weekend runs Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., according to Visit Lake Norman's Halloween events page. Kids 12 and under get in free, there's trick-or-treating at more than 100 spots around the village, and the costume contest starts at 2:30 p.m.

For one last fall farm outing, Historic Rural Hill's corn maze at 4431 Neck Road in Huntersville runs through Oct. 31. The day maze is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 3:30. On Friday and Saturday nights in October, a night maze opens at 5 p.m., with last entry at 8. Tickets are $11 to $20, and the farm also lists a pumpkin patch and hayrides. Saturday is the maze's final day this season, so a Rural Hill morning won't get in the way of the 2 p.m. show at the Black Box Theater.

What Comes After the Costumes

Two holiday dates are already set. On Saturday, Dec. 5, Lincoln County's 2026 ordinance for the Denver Christmas Parade closes several roads, including Business Hwy. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. That's the same stretch as Saturday's fire department drive-thru, so plan December errands around it. The parade start time hasn't been announced yet.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, the EnergyExplorium hosts its 8th Annual Lighted Christmas Boat Parade viewing at 5 p.m. Duke's calendar mentions photos with Santa, dinner and holiday music performed by area students. This Thursday's trunk-or-treat is a good chance to try the drive to the EnergyExplorium before the boat parade crowd shows up.

Whichever night your family picks, we hope the candy bags come home full. At Good Fortune Homes, Luz keeps up with weeks like this one, when Denver's calendar fills up along NC-73 and NC-16 Business. If you've wondered how much your home near these routes is worth heading into the holidays, Luz is happy to help in English or Spanish.
